Metro Ethernet is an Ethernet transport network that provides point-to-point or multi point connectivity services over a metropolitan area network (MAN). Metro Ethernet provides you a high-speed, high-bandwidth TLS (Transparent LAN Service) network and Internet communication capabilities. Because it is a dedicated link to your business, the security of your system is easier to maintain. The opportunity to have a secure link both internally at one location as well as link one or more of your other business locations could prove invaluable as your business grows. Metro Ethernet uses existing fiber optic cable in your area to provide you with a system that is totally separated from outside interference or security issues. You are able to control your Internet access from a single point, with a single firewall, even with multiple business locations. This provides unparalleled security for your internal business systems.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ADVANTAGES?
Speed (bandwidth) – Initial speed available to all customers is 10Mbps. This is upgradeable in 1 to 10Mbps increments up to 100Mbps speeds. It is further upgradeable from there to 1Gbps in 100Mbps increments. As you need additional bandwidth for future applications, the capability of the system is already there, and you pay for only what you need as you add features or locations. For instance, if you do mostly text data transfer at the present time, but in the future have the need to transmit real-time images; the upgradeability is available when you need it.
Rapid Deployment – Since the network of fiber optic cabling is already in place, the time from placing your order and being fully connected is held to a minimum, unequalled by other services.
Cost – Since the service uses existing fiber optic cable, the initial costs are much lower than some competing technologies where expensive equipment must be purchased and installed, causing high up-front costs. In contrast, MetroEthernet will have a very modest up-front cost.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The service is very analogous to a hub and spoke Frame Relay system and will perform similar to private leased lines. The service provides symmetrical bandwidth for data sent in either direction using a “best effort” assurance between your locations. The locations do not have to employ the same speed and bandwidth to be able to talk to each other effectively. The provider to customer connection meets standards for 10BaseT, 100BaseT and 1000BaseSX found in IEEE 802.3-2000 The frame delay specifications for data transfer commonly result in 95% of the service frames being delivered point to point with a maximum delay of 15ms. Higher or tighter service frame specifications are possible with some additional costs being incurred.
Whatever your Quality of Service (QoS) requirements are, we will be able to accommodate them with MetroEthernet. Since the service employs existing network hardware, there is a space savings as far fewer provider pieces of hardware need to be in your facility to operate. There can be a considerable space savings depending on your current hardware requirements.
Whether you want to augment an existing network, replace your current network, or simply connect branch offices using a cost effective and reliable solution; large or small.
